About This Pilgrimage

Join Father Jerome Magat for six nights on pilgrimage to Mexico

Join Father Jerome Magat for six nights on pilgrimage to Mexico in the summer of 2027, built around Our Lady of Guadalupe and the tilma of Saint Juan Diego, with Holy Mass each day at the great shrines of Mexico City, Puebla, and Tlaxcala. The pilgrimage falls in the centenary years of the Cristero War, and in 2027 the Church marks 100 years since the martyrdom of Blessed Miguel Pro.

Four nights in the center of Mexico City open the pilgrimage, beginning with Sunday Mass at the Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe on Tepeyac Hill, before the tilma that came through the 1921 bombing of its altar untouched. The Mexico City days reach the Pyramids of the Sun and the Moon at Teotihuacán, the canals of Xochimilco and the old plazas of Coyoacán and San Ángel, and the National Museum of Anthropology. At the heart of the week is Mass at the tomb of Blessed Miguel Pro in the Church of the Holy Family (La Sagrada Familia) in Colonia Roma. The young Jesuit was shot by firing squad on November 23, 1927, in the Cristero persecution, arms outstretched, crying “¡Viva Cristo Rey!” This pilgrimage comes to him in the centenary year of his martyrdom.

The group then moves once, to two nights in Puebla, praying at the tomb of Blessed Conchita Cabrera on the way out of the capital and climbing to Our Lady of Remedies atop the Great Pyramid of Cholula. From Puebla come the gilded Chapel of the Rosary, the incorrupt Blessed Sebastián de Aparicio, and the shrines of San Miguel del Milagro and Our Lady of Ocotlán. On the final morning the group returns to the Basilica to give thanks before the flights home. A ProRome Tour Manager is with the group from arrival to departure.

Additional Trip Information

Practical details to help you prepare for the Fr. Jerome Magat pilgrimage.

Flight Information

The pilgrimage is priced land only. ProRome has reserved round-trip group air on Aeroméxico nonstop flights from San Francisco (SFO) at $1,098 per person, priced separately from the land package and due April 2, 2027. A Washington Dulles option for pilgrims from Virginia is coming soon. The outbound lands in Mexico City at midday on July 31, where the ProRome Tour Manager and an arrival assistant meet everyone, and the return leaves the evening of August 6. Full details are in the Group Flight Information section above. Questions: office@prorome.com.

Lodging Information

Mexico City (4 nights): Hotel Casa Blanca, a four-star hotel in the center of the city. Puebla (2 nights): hotel in the city, to be confirmed. The group changes hotels only once. Final property details will be included in the trip information packet.

Group Meals

Daily breakfast and dinner are included, from the welcome dinner on arrival to breakfast on the departure morning, with bottled water on the coach and at dinner. Lunches are on your own, including the optional lunch on board the trajineras at Xochimilco. Beverages other than water are not included. Gratuities for the guide and driver are not included; the suggested amounts are $4 and $3 per person per day.

Dietary & Health

No dietary restrictions. Vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free, or celiac: we work only with restaurants and caterers that have ample options. If you have allergies, simply inform the tour manager at the start of the trip. Drink only bottled or purified water. Mexico City lies at about 7,350 feet, so take it easy the first day and stay hydrated. All participants are expected to be in active good health and able to travel as part of a group; walking and stairs are required throughout. Any condition needing special attention should be reported in writing at registration.

What to Pack

This is a summer pilgrimage in the rainy season. At altitude, Mexico City and Puebla are mild, with days in the low to mid 70s°F and cool evenings in the 50s, and afternoon showers are common. Bring broken-in walking shoes, a light rain jacket or compact umbrella, a sweater or light layer for evenings, a hat and sunscreen for the strong high-altitude sun, and modest attire (shoulders and knees covered). A daypack, refillable water bottle, and prescription medications in original containers round it out. U.S. plugs work in Mexico, so no adapter is needed.

Placing Calls in Mexico

From a U.S. phone, dial the international code “011” or “+”, then Mexico’s country code 52, then the 10-digit number. Contact your service provider a few days before departure to activate international calling on your phone; many U.S. plans already include Mexico.

Crisis Management

If lost: stay put, call your tour manager, or take an authorized taxi to the hotel. If you lose your passport, phone, or wallet: notify your tour manager immediately; the U.S. Embassy in Mexico City can issue emergency passports. If injured: notify your tour manager and we arrange emergency transport. Read the full plan →

Mexico: Capital Mexico City · Currency Mexican peso · Spanish language · Central time all year, so in summer 2 hours behind EDT and 1 ahead of PDT.
