About This Pilgrimage

Eleven Days Walking in the Footsteps of the Great Saints of Western Catholicism

Embark on a nine night pilgrimage throughout Italy to experience the fullness of our Catholic heritage. Daily Mass celebrated at historic sites such as the tomb of St. Peter, St. Paul, in the cliffside cave of St. Benedict, and the tomb of St. Francis in Assisi is the cornerstone of each day of the pilgrimage.

Six nights in Rome open the pilgrimage. The time in Rome includes the Papal Wednesday General Audience in St. Peter’s Square, visits to the Vatican Museums and Sistine Chapel, the Colosseum and the Roman Forum, the Catacombs of San Sebastiano, the relics of the True Cross at Santa Croce in Gerusalemme, and the great Papal Basilicas: St. Peter’s, St. John Lateran, St. Paul Outside the Walls, and Santa Maria Maggiore. Two days reach out of the city into Benedictine country: an optional afternoon south to Monte Cassino, the motherhouse founded in 529 where Benedict wrote the Rule and died, and a full day east into the Aniene Valley to the Sacro Speco of Subiaco, where he began.

The group then moves north into Umbria for three nights in Assisi where we will visit the tomb of St. Francis beneath Giotto’s fresco cycle, the San Damiano Crucifix, the Portiuncula, and the forest hermitage of the Eremo delle Carceri. The visit to Assisi includes a day trip to Norcia which is the birthplace of the sibling saints, Benedict and Scholastica.

The Road to Departure

Seven stations between today and the airport. Pass your cursor over each one for the details, or tap on mobile.

Station 1RegisterStart Here

Click Register Now near the top of this page and follow the prompts, using registration code Thuringer2027. Your $300 deposit is due with your registration.

Station 2Upload Your PassportRight After Registering

After registering we send you a link to upload your passport. New and renewed passports can take up to three months, so apply today if needed. Passports must be valid six months after the date of return.

Station 3Your Group FlightsBooked For You

Group airfare is included in the package price, and ProRome books the flights listed in the Group Flight Information section above. Nothing to do here unless you prefer to book your own flights, in which case contact the office before you book so we can coordinate your arrival with the group.

Station 4Purchase Travel InsuranceAfter Registering

ProRome Tours sends you an insurance quote as soon as you register. We strongly recommend that every pilgrim purchase travel insurance.

Station 5Prepare PhysicallyThe Months Before

Start walking now. Expect roughly 4 to 7 miles a day on cobblestones, hills, and ancient stone steps. Subiaco, the Eremo delle Carceri, and Assisi itself all involve significant uphill walking, and mid-June in Rome is hot. Being in walking condition makes the difference between enduring the days and enjoying them.

Station 6Join the Pre-Trip ZoomSix Weeks Out

Approximately six weeks before departure ProRome hosts a mandatory Pre-Trip Zoom Meeting. If you cannot attend, a recording is sent to you. The invitation arrives by email a few weeks in advance.

Station 7Trip Boxes & Final DetailsThe Final Month

About a month before departure, trip boxes arrive with name tags, luggage tags, and detailed itineraries. Two weeks out, each pilgrim receives the final trip information by email: itineraries, rooming lists, e-ticket numbers, and every last detail.

Good to Know

Additional Trip Information

Practical details to help you prepare for the South Dakota pilgrimage.

Flight Information

The group flies out of Minneapolis–St. Paul (MSP), and group airfare of $2,296 per person is included in the package price. Outbound: June 7, Delta 298 MSP to FCO at 8:20 PM, arriving Rome 12:40 PM June 8. Return: June 17, Air France 1205 FCO to CDG at 10:00 AM, connecting to Air France 088 CDG to MSP at 3:45 PM, arriving Minneapolis 7:50 PM the same day. The 10:00 AM departure from Rome means a very early coach out of Assisi, roughly 5:00 AM. Pilgrims who prefer to book their own flights may do so, but personal flights must arrive before or at the same time as the group flight; please email your itinerary to office@prorome.com.

Lodging Information

You will stay in hotels and religious guesthouses, chosen for location and for the contemplative character of this pilgrimage. Rome (6 nights): accommodation in the Vatican area. Assisi (3 nights): accommodation in the centro storico. Specific properties are being finalized and will be confirmed in the final trip information packet.

Group Meals

Daily breakfast, eight group dinners, and one group lunch are included. Remaining meals are on your own, which lets pilgrims explore at their own pace. Beverages other than water are not included in group meals. Allergies and dietary needs should be noted in writing at registration so we can brief the restaurants in advance; remind your tour manager on day one as well.

Dietary & Health

No dietary restriction is a problem. We only work with restaurants and caterers that have ample options. All participants are expected to be in active good health and able to travel as part of a group; walking and stairs are required throughout. Any condition needing special attention should be reported in writing at registration.

What to Pack

This is a summer pilgrimage. Rome highs in mid-June commonly run 82 to 88°F, with Assisi a few degrees cooler at elevation. Bring broken-in walking shoes, lightweight breathable clothing, modest attire for churches with shoulders and knees covered (a light scarf or shawl solves this in the heat), a hat, sunglasses, and high-SPF sunscreen. A daypack, a refillable water bottle for Rome’s public fountains, a universal power adapter, prescription medications in original containers, and a small notebook for reflection round it out. Pack light: you move between two cities, and one very early morning.

Placing Calls in Italy

From a U.S. phone, dial the international code “011” or “+”, then Italy’s country code 39, then the number. France’s country code is 33, useful on the return connection through Paris. Contact your service provider a few days before departure to activate international calling on your phone.

Crisis Management

If lost: stay put, call your tour manager, or take a taxi to the hotel. If you lose your passport, phone, or wallet: notify your tour manager immediately; the U.S. Embassy in Rome can issue an emergency limited-validity passport, usually within a business day. If injured: notify your tour manager and we arrange emergency transport. Read the full plan →
