A Confirmation Pilgrimage to Assisi and Rome

with Fr. John Meyerhofer
Alexandria, VA
The Pilgrimage

The confirmation class of the Basilica of Saint Mary in Alexandria travels to Italy with Fr. John Meyerhofer during Easter Week. Families of the confirmandi are welcome, and the pilgrimage is open to every parishioner who would like to come. The group prays at the tombs of Saint Francis and Saint Carlo Acutis in Assisi and of Saints Peter and Paul in Rome, and ends the week with Divine Mercy Sunday in Saint Peter’s Square.

Pilgrims book their own flights and meet the group at Rome Fiumicino on the morning of March 30. The coach stops in Orvieto for Mass at the cathedral that keeps the Corporal of the Eucharistic Miracle of Bolsena, then continues to Assisi for two nights. The last four nights are in Rome, with all four major basilicas, the Holy Stairs, the catacombs, the Vatican Museums and the historic center. On Divine Mercy Sunday the group joins the Holy Father for the Regina Caeli.

Whatever you book, plan to land at Rome Fiumicino by 10:00 AM on March 30, because the coach leaves for Orvieto and Assisi at 11:00 AM. Send your flight details to office@prorome.com once booked.

What if my flight lands later?

If you land after 11:00 AM on March 30, you travel to Assisi on your own by train or taxi and join the group at the hotel. You will miss the visit to Orvieto. The office can help you plan the route.

How do I get to the airport at the end?

The coach makes two transfers from the Rome hotel to Fiumicino on April 5, at 5:00 AM and 8:00 AM. If neither works for your flight, a taxi from the hotel to the airport costs about $60, paid on your own.

Who can come?

The pilgrimage is built for the confirmandi of the Basilica of Saint Mary and their families, and it is open to all parishioners. Minors must travel with a parent or guardian, or with an authorization the office will send you after registration.

Where will we stay?

Assisi (2 nights) and Rome (4 nights) in four-star hotels, double occupancy. Specific properties will be confirmed in the final trip information packet.

Which meals are included?

Daily breakfast and dinner, from the welcome dinner in Assisi on arrival day through the farewell dinner on Divine Mercy Sunday, plus a group lunch on Divine Mercy Sunday. Other lunches are on your own. Beverages other than water are not included at group meals.

How do payments work?

A $300 deposit is due within 10 days of registering. Half of the remaining land price, $1,495, is due November 29, 2026, and the balance of $1,495 is due December 29, 2026, together with the single room supplement if you requested one. All payments are made in the ProRome app.

Will we see the Pope?

On Divine Mercy Sunday the group joins the Holy Father for the Regina Caeli in Saint Peter’s Square at noon. This depends on the Holy Father being in Rome that Sunday.

What about dietary needs and health?

We work with restaurants that have ample vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free options. If you have allergies, inform the office at registration and the tour manager at the start of the trip. Walking and stairs are required throughout, including the steep streets of Assisi and Orvieto. Any condition needing special attention should be reported in writing at registration.

What should I pack?

Early April in Rome and Assisi usually runs from the high 40s to the high 60s°F, with a chance of rain. Bring broken-in walking shoes, layers, a light rain jacket and a small umbrella. Shoulders and knees must be covered in churches.
