About This Pilgrimage

Eight days on the Holy Spirit Prep pilgrimage, where the classroom meets the ground it teaches

The Holy Spirit Prep pilgrimage travels to Italy for six nights in Rome, with each day built around Mass and guided visits to the principal basilicas, shrines, and historic sites of the Catholic faith, from the tombs of the Apostles to the Franciscan sanctuaries of Assisi.

The pilgrimage includes two encounters with the Holy Father: the Sunday Angelus in St. Peter’s Square and the Wednesday Papal General Audience with Pope Leo XIV. Rome brings St. Paul Outside the Walls, the Catacombs of St. Sebastian along the Via Appia Antica, the four Major Papal Basilicas, the Holy Stairs, the relics of the True Cross at Santa Croce in Gerusalemme, the ancient layers of San Clemente, Trastevere, and the Vatican Museums and Sistine Chapel.

A full-day excursion north into Umbria brings the group to Assisi: the tomb of St. Francis and the Giotto frescoes, the San Damiano Crucifix, the tomb of St. Clare, the resting place of St. Carlo Acutis, and the cathedral where both Francis and Clare were baptized. A ProRome Catholic Tour Manager accompanies the group throughout, and the entire group travels together on the same Scandinavian Airlines flights, out and back.

Important Action Items

The Road to Departure

Seven stations between today and the airport. Pass your cursor over each one for the details, or tap on mobile.

Station 1RegisterThe First Step

Click “Register Now” near the top of this page and follow the prompts on the form to begin your registration, using registration code ITA051427. Register early, the group air block holds a fixed number of seats.

Station 2Upload Passport (or apply today)Right After Registering

After registering we’ll send you a link to upload your passport. New and renewed passports can take up to three months. Apply ASAP if needed. Passports must be valid six (6) months after the date of return. Your airline ticket is issued in the exact name on your passport, so we need the passport on file before ticketing. Corrections after ticketing carry an airline fee.

Station 3Your Flights Are BookedNothing to Do

ProRome books the group air on Scandinavian Airlines from Atlanta under a group contract, so there is nothing for you to book. Airfare of $1,395 per person is already part of your trip price, and the exact flight numbers and times are in the Group Flight Information section above.

Station 4Purchase Travel InsuranceAfter Registering

ProRome Tours will send you a complimentary Allianz insurance quote as soon as you register. We strongly recommend that every pilgrim purchase travel insurance, especially now that airfare is part of your trip cost, since airline tickets are non-refundable once issued.

Station 5Prepare PhysicallyThe Months Before

This is an active, walking pilgrimage. Much of Rome’s historic core lies within the Zona a Traffico Limitato (ZTL), where tour coaches cannot operate, so the group travels on foot between many sites: expect roughly 3 to 7 miles of walking on the busier days, much of it on cobblestones, hills, and stone steps, and Assisi’s streets are notably steep. We recommend pilgrims begin walking now to prepare, in well broken-in shoes.

Station 6Join the Pre-Trip ZoomSix Weeks Out

Approximately six weeks prior to departure ProRome will host a Pre-Trip Zoom Meeting. This meeting is mandatory, and if you cannot attend, a recording of the meeting will be sent to you. An invitation to this meeting will be sent to you by email a few weeks in advance.

Station 7Trip Boxes & Final DetailsThe Final Month

Approximately one month before departure, ProRome Tours will send trip boxes to all participants. Items include name tags, luggage tags, final detailed itineraries, and more. Two weeks before departure, ProRome Tours will email each pilgrim the final trip information: e-tickets and flight details, detailed itineraries, rooming lists, and any other pertinent details.

Good to Know

Additional Trip Information

Practical details to help you prepare for the Holy Spirit Prep pilgrimage.

Flight Information

Round-trip airfare is included at $1,395 per person and arranged by ProRome. The group flies together on Scandinavian Airlines, departing Atlanta (ATL) and connecting through Copenhagen (CPH) to Rome Fiumicino (FCO).

Out: SK 930, ATL 7:30 PM → CPH 10:15 AM · SK 1691, CPH 1:10 PM → FCO 3:45 PM.
Back: SK 1692, FCO 9:40 AM → CPH 12:15 PM · SK 929, CPH 1:35 PM → ATL 5:05 PM.

See the Group Flight Information section above for the full schedule and connection times.

Lodging Information

You will stay at a religious guesthouse in keeping with the contemplative character of this pilgrimage.

Rome (6 nights): A religious guesthouse within walking distance of the Vatican.

The specific property is pending availability and will be confirmed at the time of booking; if the first choice cannot be secured, ProRome will source a comparable religious guesthouse nearby.

Group Meals

Daily breakfast plus one additional meal each day (lunch or dinner, per the itinerary) are included. Remaining meals are on your own, allowing pilgrims to explore at their own pace.

Beverages other than water are not included at group meals.

If you have allergies or dietary needs, please note them at registration: we pass them to the airline as well as to our restaurants.

Walking & Ground Transportation

Several days take place in the heart of Rome’s Zona a Traffico Limitato (ZTL), a restricted historic core where tour coaches are not permitted. On these days the group travels on foot between sites, and daily walking estimates (roughly 3–7 miles) are built into the itinerary. Assisi’s streets are notably steep.

A private motorcoach is used for both airport transfers, the Monday excursion to St. Mary Major, St. Paul Outside the Walls, the catacombs and the Lateran, and the full-day Assisi excursion; those days are clearly marked in the day-by-day itinerary.

Gratuities & What’s Not Included

Gratuities are not included. We suggest approximately €2–3 per person per day for the driver and €3–5 per person per day for the Tour Manager.

Also not included: one meal each day, beverages at included meals, checked-bag fees beyond the group allowance, seat-selection fees, travel insurance, and any items of a personal nature.

What to Pack

Essentials: well broken-in walking shoes (you will cover several miles a day on cobblestones), layered clothing for variable mid-May weather (Rome highs often in the low-to-mid 70s°F, with cooler mornings), modest attire for churches (shoulders and knees covered), a hat, sunscreen, and a light rain jacket for the occasional shower.

Helpful: daypack, refillable water bottle, universal power adapter, prescription medications in original containers, and a small notebook for reflection.

Pack light: you will be moving on foot with your group most days, and you will change planes in Copenhagen in both directions.

Chaperones & Supervision

Chaperone ratio is calculated on a trip by trip basis, based on local diocesan guidelines and best practices.

Dietary & Health

Vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free, and other needs can be accommodated: ProRome works with restaurants and caterers that have ample options, and special meals can be requested from the airline in advance. Please report any dietary requirement at registration.

All participants are expected to be in active good health and able to travel and walk as part of a group; walking and stairs are required throughout. Any condition needing special attention should be reported in writing at registration.

Placing Calls in Italy

From a U.S. phone, dial the international code “011” or “+”, then Italy’s country code 39, then the number.

Contact your service provider a few days before departure to activate international calling on your phone.

Crisis Management

If lost: Stay put. Call your tour manager or take a taxi to the guesthouse. If you lose your passport, phone, or wallet: Notify your tour manager immediately. The U.S. Embassy in Rome can issue replacement passports within hours. If injured: Notify your tour manager and we arrange emergency transport. Read the full plan →

Country Information

Italy: Capital Rome · Currency Euro · Italian language · 6 hours ahead of EST.

Currency: Cards widely accepted, but carry cash for small shops. Outlets: 220V, two-round-prong plugs, bring an adapter.

Passports: No visa for U.S. citizens. Carry your passport at all times by European law. The Copenhagen connection is your point of entry into the Schengen Area, so passport control happens there, not in Rome.
