Art Professor Guest Professor
Each day of Bella Vita will find us immersed in the natural splendor of Italy!
Welcome to the Bella Vita Summer Program! My name is Carol Long and I am the art history guest professor at Bella Vita. Summer Program. I fell in love with Italy while completing a graduate degree at the Villa Schifinoia School of Fine Arts. in Florence. I am so excited to share my love of Italy with you! The twelve days that we will share in Italy will be unforgettable. We will experience some of the world’s most beloved cities and sites, and be awed by some of the most beautiful works of art and architecture ever created. I am certain that this trip will kindle your desire to return to Italy again and again, to always discover more.I would like to introduce a few useful ideas to you.
As most of you prepare to meet Italy for the first time, you may want to begin at your local library, for a “preview” of some of what we will see. I recommend leafing through the enduring classics of art history that your parents or grandparents used in college, which are still the best! These are Janson’s “History of Art” or Gardner’s “Art Through the Ages.” “Art History” by Marilyn Stokstad is another excellent survey. Pay special attention to the chapters on Roman, Early Christian, Renaissance and Baroque art. But whether you arrive in Rome with some idea – or no idea – of what awaits you, be assured that each day of Bella Vita will find us immersed in the natural splendor of Italy – and the comforting presence of art at every turn: works of genius inspired by faith, constant reminders of the abiding presence of God.
